Top States in ISL 2017-18 in terms of number of footballers
India is a country that worships cricketers. But despite that, some states have maintained a niche craziness about football. After 70 years of independence, there are only a handful of states that boast of football culture. West Bengal, Kerala, Goa, Manipur, Mizoram, are states worthy of mention.
Now, with the advent of Indian Super League, many Indians are beginning to direct their attention more towards football. But when it comes to player selections, a few states evidently have a clear edge over the others. There were a total of 156 Indian players in the least last season. Lets look the the states that top the list in terms of number of players selected to play in the Indian Super League.
At the top of the chart is Goa, with a whopping 24 players. Some of their top names include Albino Gomez (Goalkeeper), Romeo Fernandes and Lenny Rodrigues. The Goan squad mostly comprises of defense and midfield. It would be good to see some strikers being added in future.
2. West Bengal
I was actually expecting a lot more players from West Bengal (considering the rich history), but nonetheless, this state has managed to keep second spot with 20 players. Out the 20 selected players, 7 are goal-keepers. I found that quite peculiar. Anyway, great job still West Bengal!
The Jewel of the North-east ties up for the second spot with West Bengal, with a total of 20 players again. Manipur players consists of majorly mid-fielders, 11 of them, to be precise.
With a total tally of 19 players, Punjab ranks 3rd in the country. The Punjab players consist of some star forwards like Balwant Singh, a few midfielders and defenders, and the rest goalies.
This lovely state from the north east yielded 17 promising footballers for this ISL. Jeje Lalpekhlua, Jerry Mawihmingthanga, are some of the stars that hail from this hilly state.
